Yellowstone, part 4
Snow again this morning. Cold, 27 outside, a toasty 40 in the tent.
Took my time in hitting the road since i was sure the Lamar Valley road will be closed.
Got to the Canyon intersection and sure enough, it was closed. The ranger suggested I take the longer route, which would take a couple of hours longer. I knew i could not make the round trip and be back at camp by 5, but i headed that way anyway to take in the views. (I later learned that the road opened just after we left.) And they were fantastic. Donner even came almost nose to nose with a big bison and was bewildered, to say the least.
Saw a Defender coming in the opposite direction, but no place to stop and exchange stories. We flashed lights and moved on.
At the rest stop where I turned around, i met a delightful family from Chicago, including their teenage son and daughter. They were taken in by the Defender and Donner. Meeting people like this adds extra value to these trips.
The westher cleared as we headed to camp, which we made precisely at 5. Good timing.
No sooner had i unloaded the Defender from out day trip, when a white Defender 110 pulled up. Out popped Martin and Martina from Austria who are traveling from Canada to Argentina over the next year. We exchanged travel and Defender stories, shared a beer, and wished each other safe journeys. You can follow their blog at www.defender2travel.com.
Time to get ready for another cold night. Hopefully, we can make the Lamar Valley tomorrow. If not, we will stay another day.
